Forest Monitoring

Our team has been involved in several seasons of forest monitoring for Auckland Council programmes that aim to measure changes in ecological integrity through the assessment of plant species composition and abundance, growth and mortality, and overall forest structure.Outputs from this work are used in their state of the environment reporting and to help measure the effectiveness of Auckland Council’s pest management programmes in protecting forest ecosystem values.

For our team, this means lots of long days in the bush identifying plants, listening for birds and being able to appreciate the unique biodiversity that the Auckland region has to offer. Our team has had the privilege of measuring plots in some beautiful sites such as Shakespear Regional Park and the Waitakere Ranges, sometimes going even as far as the top of the Awhitu Peninsula. It’s fair to say that no two days are the same with this work and the team always looks forward to getting out there and getting the job done!
