Freshwater ecosystems are under increasing pressure from factors such as contamination, climate change and land use intensification. However, work is being done around New Zealand to try and improve multiple aspects of these systems to ensure their quality for future generations.
Biosecurity is critical for ensuring the health of New Zealand’s ecosystems for future generations. This is why when the invasive aquatic species, Cabomba caroliniana, was detected that trials were initiated by the Auckland Council and Biosecurity NZ to determine the most effective way to control the species.
For our team, this means lots of long days in the bush identifying plants, listening for birds and being able to appreciate the unique biodiversity that the Auckland region has to offer. Our team has had the privilege of measuring plots in some beautiful sites such as Shakespear Regional Park and the Waitakere Ranges, sometimes going even as far as the top of the Awhitu Peninsula.
